Date: April 19, 2014
Location: Blue Canyon at 5,200 feet in the Sierras
NELM: Average at 6.2 with areas of poor transparency.

Telescope: 22” f/4.0 reflector sitting on a Crossbow EQT-200 equatorial platform
Eyepieces (not all are used):  24mm Panoptic (finder eyepiece), 16, 10, 6 and 4mm ZAO-II’s, 12.5, 9, 7 and 5mm BGO, 12, 10, 8, and 6mm Delos, and TMB 1.8x ED Barlow.

Selected objects: Flat galaxies

Images are from PanSTARRS unless noted.

Note: This page was added on June 2026 as I am catching up on the ORs for half of 2013 and all of 2014.  At some point, I'll find a way to incorporate my ORs (mid 80s to 2008) from a spreadsheet into an acceptable format.

NGC 3454  (10 54 28.8  +17 20 38  size 2.6x0.4'  mag 14.2p)

22" (192, 255, and 287x) - considerably bright 5:1 thin even surface brightness glow. No core. Defined edges. PA = 60. A fairly bright star lies about 1' south and continuing on, I see NGC 3455 which is a 3:2 elongated glow with a mottled even surface brightness glow with defined edges.  PA = 120

NGC 3044  (09 53 40.5  +01 34 45  size 4.9x0.7'  mag 12.5b)

22" (192, 255, and 287x) - Considerably bright very long thin glow. Defined edges. No other details. PA = 60. a faint star is just north of the east tip.  Fairly poor transparency observation.

UGC 5245  (09 47 33.6  -02 01 56  size 2.5x0.3'  mag 14.7)

22" (192, 255, and 287x) - Note: Poor transparency. Very faint, low surface brightness thin glow.  An unequal double star is just west of the north tip and a star lies just off the south tip.  PA = 30.

UGC 5708  (10 31 13.4  +04 28 14  size 3.4x0.6'  mag 13.8p)

22" (192x) - Considerably faint, 4:1 elongated glow. Even surface brightness. Somewhat diffuse edges, no central brightening. PA = 10.  A uneven double star is just off the north tip.

MCG-1-26-12  (10 02 36.0  -06 00 49  size 2.8x0.3'  mag 15.7)

22" (192x) - very faint, 2:1 elongated glow. Even surface brightness. No central brightening. Diffuse edges and rapidly diminishing ends. PA = 150

NGC 3365  (10 46 12.0  +01 48 46  size 4.4x 0.7'  mag 13.2b)

22" (192x) - Considerably faint, 4:1 ghostly glow. Void of stars in the field. Even surface brightness, somewhat defined edges. PA = 30

MCG-3-24-1  (09 11 54.7  -20 07 09  size 4.1x0.3'  mag 14.4p)

22" (192x) - Very faint 3:1 thin glow. Even surface brightness. PA = 20.  Note: Observation made when this object was pretty low in the sky glow.

MCG-3-28-15  (10 51 24.0  -19 53 32  size 3.3x0.4'  mag 13.8p)

22" (192x) - Considerably faint thin glow. Even surface brightness. Defined edges. PA = 30

MCG-1-32-4  (12 20 48.0  -06 58 19  size 1.4x0.2'  mag 15.7)

22" (192x) - Considerably faint, 3:1 glow. Even surface brightness, defined edges. PA = 45 and 1.1' long.  Nearby galaxy is 4.1' NW, MCG-1-32-3, was a very faint 2:1 elongated even surface brightness glow.  PA = 50 and 0.5' long. The galaxy to the SW was not seen.

NGC 4330  (12 23 16.8  +11 22 05  size 4.4x0.8'  mag 13.1b)

22" (192x) - Considerably bright, thin even surface brightness glow. Defined edges.  PA = 120 and about 3' long. A pair of bright stars, mags 9.6 and 10.3, lies about 4' NW and NNE respectively.
