Back to Observing Reports Selected Observing Notes from August 2010 at IHOP Observed on August 14, 2010 There were a bunch of us at IHOP. NELM was about 6.5, seeing was average. I arrived well after dark and proceeded to quickly setup and start observng. My daighter, Evelyn was with me. Transparency 3/5 and seeing 3/5 Continuing on my flat galaxy survey based on my guide. Started off with bright NGC flat galaxies as I was warming up and just to knock those off with “fresh” observations. I observed most of the NGCs earlier in my observing career. I didn’t do a count, but sure that I have less than 1500 NGCs left, many are in the far southern hemisphere. I’m still far behind Steve Gottlieb. Equipment used: 22” f/4 reflector with no tracking 20mm Pentax XW finder eyepiece 12.5, 7mm Baader Genuine Orthoscopics 10 and 6mm Zeiss ZAO-II Orthoscopics 5mm Takahashi LE

(22” – 184, 255, 306 and 328x) – Bright thin glow with well-defined edges. Dust lane in the middle quarter. Slightly brighter center. A mag 14.8 star is just off the east tip. PA = 120 and 33’ long.
(22” – 184, 306, 328 and 383x) – Very bright thin streak with well-defined edges. Dust lane on the south edge running across the middle third. Faint stellar core. PA = 45 and 3.7’ long. A 10.4 mag star lies 3.5 east from the tip. Unlabeled galaxy lies 1.3’ west from the center appears as a considerably faint round glow with a much brighter center. 0.2’ across. |
(22” –255, 306 and 383x) – Bright think streak with well-defined edges. Almost stellar core in the middle. 2.1’ long ad PA = 135. 10.7 mag star 2.3’ NW from tip. Nearby MAC galaxy, MAC 1538+5924B is extremely faint, very small round glow. It lies 5.0’ due east from the center of NGC 5981. Part of a nice trio in Draco consisting of NGC 5982 and NGC 5985. |
(22” – 184, 328 and 383x) – Faint, thin streak. Even surface brightness. Defined edges. No central brightening. Triangle of mag 13 stars to the south. PA = 165 and 0.7’ long. Did not see MAC 2338+3221, which lies 1.8’ NW. |
(22” –255, 328 and 383x) – Extremely faint thin glow. Low surface brightness. A 16th mag star lies just off the west tip. A mag 12.0 star lies 0.9’ west of the center. PA = 120 and 0.9’ long. |
(22” –255, 328 and 383x) – Faint, thin glow. Even surface brightness, no central brightening. Group of 6 mag 13-15 stars lies 1.5’ west. PA = 60 and 1.2’ long. |
(22” –255, 328 and 383x) – Very faint thin glow nestled in 4 stars. Even surface brightness and no central brightening. A 15.8 mag star lies near the SW tip. A 12.9 mag star lies just north of the NE tip. PA = 45 and 1.4’ long |
(22” –255, 328, 383 and 458x) – Star field located, but no galaxy |
